When I was a child, there was always one day, near the end of August,
when we would drive to my uncle’s farm to pick tomatoes for home
canning. This was before mechanical harvesting, and there would always
be tomatoes left in the field after the last picking for the local tomato
canning cooperative that my grandfather belonged to since the 1940s.

One of my favourite days of the year is the first warm day of spring when I
dust off the propagator, buy some potting compost and look through the
many packets of tomato seeds that I have bought or exchanged with friends
and decide what which tomato varieties to grow this year. This is the sign
that the long winter is finally over.

tomato juice when fixing yourself a drink at home? Well, it appears that there
is more to it than simple holiday euphoria and leaving behind the daily grind
for two weeks. German researchers from Fraunhofer Institute for Building
Physics have found that our taste for tomato juice is stimulated when flying
at altitude and especially on long-haul flights.

The 3rd International Symposium on Human Health Effects of Fruits and Vegetables was held at the International Conference Centre, in Avignon, France, during 18 to 21 October 2009. The objective of FAV HEALTH 2009 was to continue providing a forum for horticultural scientists, nutritionists, food scientists, biomedical scientists, chemists, biochemists, clinicians, medical professionals, social economists to exchange information and bridge the communication gap between the agricultural sciences, nutrition and health sciences. Plenary sessions, oral communications and posters covered a wide range of topics from plant breeding to consumption behavior.

Scientists’ say a natural supplement made from tomatoes, if taken daily, can help to protect against heart disease and strokes.
